Ultra Wideband (UWB)

UWB Positioning: Ultra wide band is a broadband signal that can be used for 2D and 3D positioning. Accuracies of less than ten to 30 centimeters in positioning can thus be achieved.

The near field radio technology requires so-called (locator) tags and a number of so-called anchors as hardware components to enable positioning.  However, the technical classification as “local radio technology” is relativized by a range of several 100 meters. In this positioning solution, the anchors take over the function of the permanently installed reference points.

With three anchors within range of the tag, 2D location is possible. At least four anchors must be within range for 3D positioning. The item or person to be located must have a battery-powered tag. To determine the position, the tag determines the distance to multiple anchors and sends its data back to the anchors, which in turn send this data to a server-based backend. An item is only output here. UWB enables up to 100 position queries per second. Displaying the position of a tag on a device is also possible if the tag can communicate directly with the smart device via USB interface or BLE.

In contrast to other positioning solutions (e.g. Beacon/BLE technology), it is not possible to display your own position or the position of your own smartphone on a floor plan for indoor navigation via UWB. UWB technology will therefore remain a special solution in the area of location-based services. In the industrial sector, UWB demonstrates its strengths wherever maximum precision in positioning is required.
