Indoornavigation in sports stadiums and arenas has arrived.
As one of the first multifunctional arenas worldwide, SAP Arena provides its visitors with indoor navigation via the Adler app.
“From our point of view, a good orientation is an important point to feel comfortable as a guest. What has already been standard in road traffic with navigation apps for many years is now also quite simply possible within the SAP Arena,” says Managing Director Daniel Hopp about this new service for fans and visitors.
Whether to the next snack bar, the seat or standing area or the fan shop – the app locates the location and the indoornavigation guides the visitors to their destination as quickly as possible. Exactly 639 beacons, small sensors, were installed in the arena. “SAP is proud to contribute to expanding communication between the arena, club, and visitors with its innovative technology,” said Fadi Naoum, SAP Development Manager for Sports & Entertainment.
At the same time, indoor navigation generates data relevant to the operator. Motion flows and peak times are traceable and controllable via push messages. Location and status data are communicated via the M2M message protocol MQTT. Favendo thus uses the de facto standard to transfer sensor information from an IoT infrastructure and simplifies the integration of the data obtained into platforms such as SAP HANA or Oracle.

What is Indoornavigation?
Indoornavigation, also called indoor navigation or wayfinding, means the flexible guiding and navigating of people within buildings with the help of an electronic output device. Similar to systems for outdoor use, the route to a specific point is displayed on a screen or announced by the output device. In the form of a smartphone or tablet, many people conveniently carry this output device with them most of the time. In Germany, three quarters of people over the age of 14 (76 percent) already use a smartphone. This means that the majority of potential users already have one of the components required for indoor navigation and even use it very frequently. Indoornavigation is thus one of the most popular and from the user and provider’s point of view the most valuable location-based services.
